Living as an expatriated foreigner in an adopted ‘third world’ country can certainly present its challenges. The Philippines, while considered a ‘third world nation’ by most western powers is still quite advanced in some ways. I once read that the ‘average’ monthly income here is less than (the equivalent of) fifty dollars per month. But minimum wage (if you’re lucky enough to have one of these coveted jobs) has reached slightly more than five bucks a day. That’s progress. We still have the customary malls and fast-food joints in the populated areas, and there are many of those.

Yesterday the toilet seat in our upstairs bathroom broke so we took a trip to the mall (Ace Hardware) to see what they had in the way of colored toilet seats. Things rust, break and/or wear out easily here and replacing items in the home, especially plumbing parts, is an ongoing concern. Ace is one of our common destinations.

The seat selection was dismal, but I should have known it would be. Toilet seats aren’t something generally used here, at least not by the locals. The culture here is to stand up when relieving oneself (even females) and, thus, a seat is more of a hindrance than help.

The footprints attest to the fact that old habits die hard. Most toilets just don’t have seats installed. Why bother? For most they’re only a hindrance. But for me (the foreigner) they’re more of a necessity.  Read more...

I recently traveled many thousands of miles to attend a college roommate’s wedding in Hawaii. For several reasons-the over-the-top destination, the formal toast I was slated to give, my all-but-unprecedented approval of a friend’s choice of groom-I decided to splurge on a new dress for the occasion. The simple silk sheath that I bought was perfect: For once, I would look just right.

During the reception I got talking to one of the brides relatives. We got chatting about outfits, and she, though not unkindly, pointed out a few creases in my dress. “Oh my, I’d have happily lent you my clothes steamer.” I looked down and realised the effect my hasty packing had meant several creases in my beautiful dress.
