20 Questions with Celeb Hairstylist Diana Schmidtke

Whether you’d like to work on the sets of major Hollywood films or backstage at Fashion Week, leading celebrity hairstylist Diana Schmidtke’s new book, Shortcuts, is giving all you future beauty professionals out there a valuable gift– a book filled with her own personal experiences and detailed advice to help make your dreams come true in this super competitive industry!

1. You’ve already worked with an impressive number of celebrities in show business. Is there anyone that you would like to work with whom you haven’t yet?
Absolutely! It’s difficult to narrow it down to one person, but if I had to choose somebody that I could work with tomorrow, I would choose President Barack Obama.  

2. When did you discover that you wanted a career in the beauty industry?
It was actually an evolutionary process that began when I was 18 years old. (My mom, however, will tell you it started in 4th grade when my teacher confiscated my comb during class.)  For me, I remember the journey starting when my hairdresser asked me to be his hair model at the Midwest Beauty Show in Chicago. Throughout the day, I had an opportunity to walk around the convention and talk to people about their careers. On the drive home, I decided I wanted to use my creativity to make people feel good about themselves.  I immediately enrolled in beauty school.

3. Do you think this is a skill that successful beauty professionals are born with or is it one that can to be cultivated and perfected?
I’ve seen both types of artists be very successful. I’m not a natural born artist.  I attended many classes on both hair and make-up even after graduating beauty school. Even now as an educator, I continue to take the time to hone my skills.

Other famous celebrities had jobs that were just as crazy or lowly, that it gives you hope. And the lesson that we learn is, no matter how you start your working career, you can go on to bigger and better things as you build your confidence and experience, and eventually start doing what it is you love in life.

Indecisiveness is a major road block that stops a lot of teens from getting a part time job. As a general rule, indecisiveness causes one to take forever and ever on deciding on anything.

We’ve all gone through it, especially when we started out in our teenage years.

It’s understandable because there is an incredible amount of opportunity that lies before you. Too many options can cause confusion. Confusion leads to undecisiveness and people start to plan, plan, plan, without taking any action.

Theres a good old saying that goes: “No one ever got rich, PLANNING for gold.”

Get it?

People got rich “PANNING for gold!”

In other words, they took action. They kept moving forward until they were successful. And so must you.

Sometimes, if you are not that concerned about how happy you will be at your job and just need to start making money immediately, then the best thing to do is not be so picky and just get to work.

Take the first available opportunity, whatever it is, get to work and start building your experience in the work place.

When you reach for a beauty or celebrity magazine from the shelf  are you momentarily stunned by the sheer perfection of the face portrayed on the front cover ?  It might be Catherine Zeta Jones or Cheryl Cole but often you can’t help but stare momentarily looking for a flaw and there appears to be none. Perfect glistening eyes  and lips, superb white teeth, a lovely head of hair and not a blemish in sight or a wrinkle ton. You think to yourself “ how can anyone look that good?”

Well of course the answer is that they probably don’t look quite so good in ordinary everyday life. The pictures  in magazines are doctored in order to remove blemishes and wrinkles, and to subtly change eye colour or hair colour. An awful lot of enhancement takes place by photo manipulation.
Even in real life though a lot of celebrities do look good because they have the time and the money to make the very best of themselves. A  hairstyle, even a relatively simple one will not stay looking perfect without daily attention and weekly  trimming, colouring or preening. Expensive, well cut clothes make an awful lot of difference to a woman’s appearance too, and this is not always appreciated by young mums who flop about in baggy jeans and sweaters all day.

If you want to look like a celebrity then you need to take heed of some of these factors and apply them to yourself as far as you can. You may not have a celebrity’s money but if you have some of the motivation you can go a long way.
