Atrocities Against Women: Indian Perspective

                   The constitution of India enjoins upon every citizen the duty to “renounce any practice derogatory of the dignity of women”. The need to incorporate the injunction into Indian constitution arose due to the prevailing atmosphere in which the women were denied their place in family and in society and subjected to humiliation, which reduced them to a position inferior to men.

                   The incidence of crime is rising at a very fast rate in our country and crime against women is no exception. Our constitution provides equality of sexes. Despite the constitutional provisions we continue to have inequality and women are treated as inferior and subservient beings. In all spheres of life, women are denied the basic right to live with dignity. Inspite of the legal safeguards provided for women, atrocities against women continue unabated in our country. Violence against women manifests itself as rape, molestation, stripping, eve-teasing, kidnapping and abduction, aminocentisis (killing of female foetus in the womb) and the like. Domestic violence includes wife beating, dowry harassment, dowry deaths, and cruelty to women driving them to commit suicide, female infanticide and sati and so on.  Read more...

Ever since the Nintendo Wii video game console was introduced in the global market it has taken the world by storm. In the beginning Microsoft Xbox 360 managed to sell more units than Nintendo Wii in the month of September, Nintendo Wii soon overtook Microsoft to reach the top spot for the number of units sold.

Nintendo overtook Microsoft in October when 519,000 units of the game console were sold while Microsoft managed to sell only 366,000 units.

However in terms of revenue Microsoft has overtaken Nintendo Wii. Microsoft earned $354 million in revenue from sales of its video game console while Nintendo managed to earn $246 million for its Wii model and $116 million for its PS3 model.

The third major competitor Sony has also done exceptionally well for itself as it launched newer models. On the other hand the Nintendo Wii has done exceptionally well as it faces supply problems from different quarters of the world.

Though the company should be proud that demand is more than supply it is trying to close the gap by finding out more ways than one to increase considerable from their current capacity of manufacturing 1.8 million units per month.  Read more...

As long as there have been movies, there have been B movies.  Traditionally low-budget, barely publicized affairs, B movies are usually genre films (sci-fi, Western, horror, etc.) featuring actors of little or no repute, often made by small specialty studios and cranked out as if on an assembly line. 

 Although lesser features, early B movies were popular, profitable, and produced their own separate group of stars, different than the major actors of the day. They also provided an entry into Hollywood for many European directors. Back in the Golden Age, a night at the movies usually consisted of a newsreel, an episode of a serial (such as Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers), several cartoons and a double feature of a B movie and the main feature—an “A movie.” B movies were the first movie and always considered the less important film.

 In the 1930’s, the predominant B movie genre was the Western.  In the ‘40s, gangster movies and films noir became popular.  In the ’50s, with the rise of rock and roll, the cold war, and the teenager as a social force, B movies exploded into a diverse range of areas: rock and roll flicks, juvenile delinquent and hot rod melodramas, sci-fi/horror pastiches with Red Scare overtones, and foreign films dubbed into English (e.g., the Japanese Godzilla, the Italian Hercules).  Read more...
